Sports Betting Tips

Adjusting Your Strategy in the Face of Losing

One of the first tips I always stress to people who are interested in getting into the world of sports betting is that nobody wins every day, every week, or even every month. The balance of your sport books account will fluctuate like the stock market.  You can just as easily go on a 2-10 losing streak as you can a 10-2 winning streak--we call these "swings". Early success in sports betting often leads to a false sense of security, and a feeling that things will always be this good. Trust me, they won't. As is the case with everything in life, the #1 tip is simple: don't panic.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

The main sports betting tip I've been preaching is that it's imperative that you don't always look for the big score. Research, attention to detail, money management and patience are the keys to success in this game. Anything can happen on any given day, and no matter how much of an edge you think you have, nothing is guaranteed. You'll often hear a sport better say he was on the right side of a losing game, which essentially means that the game unfolded much as he predicted, however he still lost his bet due to unforeseen circumstances or just plain bad luck. If you find yourself falling into this category, relax--things always even themselves out in sports betting. If the games are unfolding as you predicted on a consistent basis but you're not winning as much as you think you should, don't change your strategy. You are doing things the right way, and it is only a matter of time before you find yourself on an extended winning streak and raking in the money.

Keep Your Cool

It's very easy to let emotions cloud your judgement when things aren't going your way. If you're angry about losing a bet, focus your attention on something non-sports related. Trust me on this, nothing good ever comes from placing bets while extremely angry. Clear your mind and re-visit your sport book account a few hours later. Money Management is a critical part of this game--making sure that you don't let a losing streak bust your entire bankroll--and one way of speeding up the process of losing your bankroll is betting while angry.

Review and Adjust

So, I've recommended that you not change your strategy if you're generally on the right side of games. But what about if you're way off? Well, the first rule as mentioned above: don't panic. This is not the time to get lazy, either. Review whatever strategy you're implementing and if it is not working, it's time to make an adjustment. What this adjustment is, exactly, depends on your current situation, but the bottom line is that it's time to switch it up a bit. Try betting on totals if you're doing poorly on spreads, or vice versa. Take a couple of days off, clear your mind and come back with a fresh start. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and a stretch of losing can be easily forgotten and wiped out by one good winning streak. Follow my tips, stay positive, learn to adapt, keep working hard and you will find success.
